The Cheat Sheet To Interview Preparation Techniques

I don’t know about you, but I find job interviews to be both exciting and nerve-wracking.

Exciting because there is the prospect of getting the job that could come with great benefits, nerve-wracking for several reasons, the main being lack of control and uncertainty. Speaking of uncertainty, I vividly recall my first interview. I expected a lot of things but not being interviewed on the spot. I was making several applications to different companies however none responded positively. I was on the verge of giving up when my aunt gave me a call. She proceeded to give me a contact to a communication expert who had founded his own company.

For some reason, I thought it would be a breeze considering the recommendation. Dear readers, that was not the case. I made the call expecting a request for my resume and cover letter and a scheduled time and place for the interview. Little did I know that the interview was to begin immediately after my introduction and the purpose for calling was out of the way. The interviewer proceeded to fire a barrage of questions leaving me scrambling to catch my breath and compose my answers. I was so close to hanging up the call and fabricating a flimsy excuse such as a bad network or my airtime depleted. T for tough! Long story short, the interviewer was kind and gave me tips that I follow like the holy word to date.

Always be prepared for anything.

Being caught off-guard can be very unsettling. For instance, one may fail to answer questions they know the answers to for reasons such as nervousness, unpreparedness, or lack of confidence. Here are techniques to help you shine in your next interview

1. Work on your resume and cover letter

These two documents are often the first impression your potential employer will have of you. Ensure they are well written, encompassing crucial details required as per the job description. Prepare several copies of these documents as they could come in handy, for instance, in case of reference or technical difficulties

2. Do adequate research

Adequate research goes beyond the company profile. Besides researching the company's, website, and understanding its mission and vision it is imperative to research the position you are applying for. Review the job description and assess the job functions. Look out for the skills and experience required for the job and match them to your own experience. This keeps you a step ahead when the interview Pannel asks questions based on your expertise

3. Formulate common behavioral competency-based questions

These are interview questions designed to assess a candidate’s ability to perform or to be successful in a particular role. They entail a demonstration of the candidate's past experiences that showcase their abilities and skills. For example, tell us about a time you had to work on a difficult project with a tight deadline. In this case, the interviewer is testing your problem-solving skills as well as your ability to perform under pressure

4. Have a mock interview

Mock interviews provide you with the opportunity to practice potential interview questions as well as the opportunity to work on your interview skills. Your ‘interviewer’ can help you identify areas where you need improvements such as your tone, presentation, and body language. Moreover, it enables you to get comfortable with the real interview process by reducing your anxiety and nerves

5. Prepare questions for your interviewer

Interview questions for the interviewer are not meant for show, this is your opportunity to make an informed decision. By asking more questions regarding the role, you can decide if the job is the right fit for you. Furthermore, you can seek clarification on areas you do not understand. Do not be afraid to ask questions as not only does it reflect on your interest but also your preparedness. Questions to the interviewer also give you the advantage of controlling the direction of the interview

6. Invest in your appearance

Rachel Zoe said that style is a way of saying who you are without having to speak. How you dress reflects your professionalism therefore take time to select an appropriate outfit for the occasion. Additionally, maintain a well-groomed appearance. Ensure your hair, nails and for the ladies, make-up is on point. You do not want to overdo it. Go for a comfortable and reserved look. Dress how you want to be addressed

7. Be in time not on time

Arriving in time means you have time to spare before the appointment. This gives you time to compose yourself before the interview. If you are nervous, you can carry out activities that will help you relax like breathing exercises, reviewing your notes, listening to calming music or even reaffirming yourself with positive talk. Remember, being nervous is normal but calming your nerves is the key to a successful interview.

The interview process can be challenging but with adequate preparation and practice, you can show the interviewer that you are the right person for the job. Follow the tips above to increase your confidence and present yourself in the best possible way! Good luck with your next interview!
