Along your career path, you will encounter significant crossroads or reach career decision-making points that will be challenging. This is when seeking the help of a professional career coach will come in handy, a coach helps you find your way in the maze and make career-enhancing decisions.
Some of the career dilemmas that you might face at various stages of your carer life include:
While some people easily pick themselves up and find solutions to their career dilemmas, some may struggle to a point of losing hope and may end up wasting their productive career years doing nothing constructive.
When you set out on a lifetime journey in search of a treasure, you expect to face difficulties along the way and sometimes you may not have all the powers within you to handle the tough situations. Building a career is pretty much like setting out on a lifetime journey in search of a treasure. In your career journey, the treasure you seek is to develop yourself and grow to a level where you find your most treasured work, work that utilizes your best talents, passion, interests, acquired skills, and expertise and that is rewarding both financially and emotionally. Work that you enjoy and sets you in a state of FLOW, in that you reach a point when you feel like you are a superstar or masterpiece at whatever you do.
We view a career as a lifetime journey because the word ‘career’ comes from the Latin word for CART or CHARIOT(CARRUS), a means to carry you from one point to another. A career is about the life you want to lead-not just a job, occupation, or profession. It involves deciding among possible and preferred futures, therefore it is a lifelong process of self-invention. It answers the question: "Who do I want to be in the world?" " What kind of lifestyle am I seeking?” and “How can I make an Impact?” According to CERIC, Canadians use the metaphor of a CANOE to represent their CAREERS. Why? Because they use canoes in their journey, and they stock it with the tools they need and proactively steer it to their desired destinations, sometimes they face rapids, and as the environment changes, so might the course. (Borrowed from CERIC)
This, therefore, requires every individual to take charge of the career choices, decisions and plans that they seek to pursue. Long gone are the days when you would fully rely on your employer to provide you with the career growth and development opportunities that you seek. You need to do it yourself and think of creating your growth journey and seize opportunities as they present themselves. Taking charge means managing the unexpected challenges that come along the way and seeking expert support when you feel stuck. Just like a sailor prepares for both the best and the worst when setting out on a mission, is the same way you need to prepare for and manage your career.
Unfortunately, many people give up on their dreams and career aspirations along the way as they face both big and small challenges that they may not have expected. Instead of giving up on your dreams, it is recommended to enlist the support of a professional career coach. A career coach will walk with you at every step of your career journey, and help you make career-enhancing decisions at key transition points, and when you reach crossroads, the coach helps to help you figure out the best route to take.
Statistics show that 99% of people who have received career coaching have achieved career growth, made better career decisions, and succeeded over shorter periods. Some have ended up making tough choices, stretching beyond their comfort zones and venturing into careers that most resonate with their passion and interests. They have thrived beyond their imagination.
At Career Bridge, we have supported people at various stages of their career journey starting from early talent development for children, high school career choices, college/student career early career development, the transition of new graduates into work, and junior and senior level working professionals career management to retirement.
Career Coaching has helped many of our clients achieve the following:
To get started on career coaching, you initially have a conversation with the coach, and share your career story, at whatever point you may be. This can be an initial phone call, a visit to the coach's office, or a zoom meeting. The coach will pick up from your initial conversation however small it may be, and build up from there. She will give you a pre-coaching questionnaire with a set of questions to help you reflect and define what you seek to achieve through coaching. The coach also usually has some proposed programmes or topics of coaching that are based on the needs you presented that she will share for you to determine whether you would like to be coached in those areas. Once you complete the questionnaire and select from other existing programmes the areas you would like to be coached in, your coach will develop your coaching plan, and then hold a pre-coaching meeting with you to ensure that there is consensus about the areas of coaching and then draw up your coaching agreement with the coaching dates and costs.
Coaching usually involves a co-creative and reflective process where the coach leads you to a path of self-discovery using a variety of coaching tools, techniques, and activities that help you to find answers to the challenges they are facing, adopt solutions, develop action plans and start a journey towards maximizing their abilities and potential to reach your purpose and career goals.
Don’t hesitate to seek the support you need to live your best life ever. Your career success unlocks your satisfaction and growth in many other areas of your life.
