Top Ten Career Lessons You Wish You Learned Earlier.

Embarking on a career journey is akin to setting sail on a vast and uncharted sea,

filled with untold adventures and unexpected challenges. Along the way, we encounter valuable lessons that, in retrospect, leave us thinking, "If only I had known this earlier." These career gems garnered through experience and wisdom, have the power to revolutionize the way we perceive our professional paths. Whether you're a seasoned pro seeking fresh insights or a newcomer ready to take the world by storm, this article promises to unveil the top ten career lessons that can reshape your trajectory and propel you toward unparalleled success. So, let's set sail together and unravel the secrets to a truly gratifying career.

The following are lessons that can set you up for professional growth when mastered earlier:

Lesson 1: The importance of self-discovery

Self-discovery simply means understanding yourself; being self-aware. Get to understand your strengths, your interests, and passions earlier own in your career journey as they will carve the path to a fulfilling and purpose-driven career. Self-awareness also being part of self-discovery means understanding your emotions, values, deal breakers, and beliefs. This will enable you to manage workplace dynamics effectively. Understanding your emotions will enable you to not only comprehend how your emotion affect other people at work but can also help you gain insights into other people's emotions. Your values and beliefs will also shape how you conduct yourself at work. It is therefore necessary for one to begin the self-discovery process before learning expensive lessons later on.

Lesson 2:You own your career

Owning your career simply means that you are responsible for your career growth. The job market currently is very competitive and gone are the days where people sit in offices and wait to get promotions. Opportunities are seized. If you want growth, you have to go the extra mile. Learn on the job to develop your expertise. Get additional training that will help you climb up the ladder to success. When you are working, give it your best. Your sacrifices are bound to be fruitful in the long run. Most importantly, do not wait for opportunities to be given to you. When opportunity comes knocking, seize it. Do not let self-doubt hold you back!

Lesson 3:Advocate for yourself

Self-advocacy has several advantages in the workplace. First and foremost, self-advocacy leads to career advancement. When you advocate for yourself, you demonstrate your skills, accomplishments, and contributions to the organization leading to recognition and consideration for promotions, raises, or other career growth opportunities. For instance, in a workplace setup, advocating for yourself will enable both your employees and colleagues to know what you stand for and what you do not. Activities like negotiating for better salaries and asserting professional boundaries at work are self-advocacy acts. They all communicate various things that need to be recognized and respected. For the former, it means that you understand the value that you bring to the table and for the latter, it means that you are establishing clear frameworks for interactions and expectations. Personal development, increased visibility, equal opportunities, and fair treatment are other benefits of self-advocacy.

Lesson 4:The Power of Professional Networks

Someone once said to me, there is no prize for "tarmacking" and that hit me hard. In retrospect, what they were saying meant that when you have the opportunity to forge networks and benefit from it, take it. Professional networks have come through for several people at various points in their career journey. Whether you are looking for a job, transitioning to a new career, need help with a work-related problem, or need mentorship, harnessing the power of professional networks is the best way to go about it. From the onset of your career, strive to build meaningful professional relationships that could open doors to new opportunities.

Lesson 5: Dealing with difficult workplace dynamics

Unfortunately, several people have suffered the devastating effects of not knowing how to maneuver difficult workplace dynamics among them loss of confidence, quitting prestigious jobs, and self-doubt and some people end up in counseling services due to the effect on their mental health. Difficult workplace dynamics include dealing with difficult bosses, toxic work environments, or even negative politics. Even though managing these situations can be difficult, sometimes, they help us learn very valuable lessons and shape us for what is to come ahead ie, leadership roles.  It is a transformative career skill that not only propels personal growth but also enriches the entire professional landscape with a more cohesive, motivated, and successful workforce. This brings us to our next point which is intertwined with managing difficult workplace dynamics.

Lesson 6: Know when and how to say no

Sometimes, saying no to colleagues and our bosses sounds illegal. However, knowing when and how to say no is a crucial aspect of personal growth, mental well-being, and career development. Learn to assess situations and ask questions particularly if you are not comfortable with something. For example, if a task does not align with your beliefs, your values or they happen to be a deal breaker for you. It is okay to turn them down. Communicate your reasons to help the other party understand your point of view. Another important lesson is that saying no doesn't necessarily have to be within the confines of the office. It is okay to say no to people who do not add value or to people who constantly overstep boundaries. Your personal and professional life will be so much easier when you do not force yourself to accommodate issues you are not comfortable with.

Lesson 7: Polish your soft skills

Soft skills are in high demand among employers today. Soft skills are personal attributes that enable individuals to interact harmoniously and effectively with other people. They include emotional intelligence, communication skills, collaboration, teamwork, flexibility, and adaptability. I particularly find flexibility and adaptability to be the most crucial skills for an individual to possess not only in a work setup. They are the cornerstone of embracing change which is inevitable. One must be open to change and adapt to new circumstances whether it is ideas, trends, or technology. With that being said, other soft skills are equally important in their own right. Polishing on soft skills prepares you for bigger and better roles in your career journey. Some individuals who received promotions or got a job got them because certain positions require you to have soft skills in addition to your expertise.

Lesson 8: Learn from your and other people's experiences

Another crucial lesson is that something does not have to happen to you so you can learn from it. A good example is failure. Failure is a very good teacher as when given another opportunity to do something different, you will learn from your mistake. In the event that one did a mistake that lead to serious repercussions, learn from it. Other people’s experiences have also shaped how we carry ourselves personally and professionally. By reflecting on your past actions and outcomes, you can identify patterns, successes, and areas for improvement, allowing you to make more informed decisions in the future. Similarly, observing and understanding the experiences of others provides valuable lessons, enabling you to avoid common pitfalls and adopt successful strategies, accelerating your personal and professional growth.

Lesson 9: It is okay to ask for help

My favorite lyrics happen to be from Sia's song Helium. I quote, "Even superwoman sometimes needed superman's soul." In the son, she compares the strength that she draws from her partner to being lifted like helium. We do not always have to get it right. When you do not know how to go about something, it is okay to ask for help for that is when we will find the strength to get it right the next time. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, therefore, we should not be too hard on ourselves. It is crucial to put our pride aside and let other people step in for us when we cannot see something through.

Lesson 10: Ambition and Patience Go hand in hand.

Rome was not built in a day therefore expecting instant gratification is setting yourself up for failure. We have seen several people take on shortcuts to get rich or to get to places and the results are not always pleasing. Take gambling for instance. Gamblers may sometimes get returns from gambling or lose all their money in gambling. It is okay to be ambitious but understand that good things take time. Career success often requires perseverance and a long-term perspective. A successful person must be a risk taker however, the risks must be calculated. Balance your ambitions and patience and watch your career thrive.
